Nutrition From The Non-Dietitian...

Hello, my name is Nathan. My sweet wife Kristen has asked me to share my thoughts on this blog. Think of me as a guest speaker. I will be sharing some of my challenges and successes when it comes to adopting the Open Eating lifestyle. As you may know, I am an IT professional, a job that presents some unusual food challenges. Since we’re just getting to know each other, I’ll share a little bit about myself.

Growing up I was always a little bit too tall, too skinny, and too nerdy. As I became an adult I became a little more social, filled out a little, but the way I think of myself remains the awkward youth hunched over a computer screen, playing a computer game, clueless to the wider world.  When I was young I ate whatever I wanted and never even thought about it, thanks to my metabolism I stayed skinny, but the downside of such a gift is that I never learned to understand my food cravings beyond fuel for my body, and I never learned the discipline of how to eat on purpose.

A far too common story, my adult life finds me sitting around more than is healthy, often hunched over a laptop or my phone when I’m not wiping my little darling’s nose or preparing a meal. As a certified busy person, I easily get caught up in day-to-day duties that come with middle age. It may come as no surprise that when I slow down a bit and check the scale I find myself heavier than I want to be. I’m sure this is a circumstance common to many of us.

I’m a bit of a slow learner when it comes to food, but my lovely and patient wife has managed to drill a few principles into my thick skull. I started a new role at work just this year, and it is one that presents an unusual challenge layered over the many other challenges common to us all. I travel out of state for work during part of the week, nearly every week of the month. I can already see how this will put some pressure on my relationship with my children, my spouse, my church, and even still more importantly- my relationship with food. All of these are worthy topics of discussion, but the focus of this blog is to discuss how food intertwines with daily life, so my primary focus will remain diet centered.

Thank you for your time, it was nice to meet you.

Looking forward to sharing what I learn with you! Up Next….Best way to breakfast ‘on the road’!
