Hey... Remember New Year Resolutions?

As the vibrant colors of summer and sunshine beam around us, it's the perfect time to remember that at one point when it wasn't so nice outside, you had some goals for building your nutrition. If you've found yourself straying from your health goals or slipping into unhealthy habits, it's ok. I do it too. Summer still offers many opportunities to reset and realign with your wellness aspirations. For one thing... it's too cold outside isn't an excuse:) (I won't lie... that's my biggest one!) Let's get back to Open Eating!

1. Embrace Small, Attainable Changes

When it comes to overhauling your lifestyle, it's crucial to start small. Rather than overwhelming yourself with drastic changes, focus on making manageable adjustments that you can sustain over time. Begin by setting realistic goals that align with your aspirations for better health.

2. Rediscover the Joy of Nutritious Eating

Spring presents an abundance of fresh produce waiting to be explored. Challenge yourself and your family to try a new fruit or vegetable weekly. Make it a fun and interactive experience by rating each new food item on a scale of 1 to 10. By incorporating a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables into your meals, you'll not only enhance the nutritional value but also add excitement and flavor to your plate.

3. Opt for Whole Foods and Diverse Grains

Diversify your meals by incorporating whole grains such as quinoa, couscous, or brown rice. Swap out refined grains for their whole counterparts to boost your intake of fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Experiment with different grain options to add texture and flavor to your dishes while providing sustained energy throughout the day.

4. Cook and Connect as a Family

Make mealtime a family affair by involving everyone in the cooking process. Encourage children to participate in meal planning, preparation, and grocery shopping. Cooking together not only fosters valuable life skills but also strengthens family bonds and creates lasting memories. Aim to cook at home more frequently to gain greater control over ingredients and portion sizes, promoting healthier eating habits for the whole family.

5. Explore Plant-Based Proteins

Incorporate plant-based proteins such as beans, lentils, tofu, or tempeh into your meals as alternatives to meat. Experiment with plant-based recipes to discover new flavors and textures while reaping the health benefits of a diverse protein intake. By reducing your reliance on animal products, you'll not only support your health but also contribute to environmental sustainability.

6. Engage with Your Community

Harness the power of community support to bolster your journey towards better health. Organize healthy recipe contests, taste-testing sessions, or food scavenger hunts within your community. By involving friends, family members, and neighbors, you'll create a supportive environment where everyone can share ideas, swap recipes, and inspire each other to make healthier choices.

7. Prioritize Personalized Nutrition

Recognize that nutrition needs vary based on age, activity level, and individual preferences. Tailor your dietary choices to meet your unique nutritional requirements and preferences. Consult with a registered dietitian if needed to receive personalized guidance and support in achieving your health goals.

8. Cultivate Mindful Eating Practices

Practice mindful eating by savoring each bite, tuning into your body's hunger and fullness cues, and cultivating gratitude for the nourishment you receive. Avoid distractions such as screens or multitasking during meals, allowing yourself to fully appreciate the sensory experience of eating. By cultivating mindfulness in your eating habits, you'll foster a deeper connection with your food and enhance overall satisfaction and well-being.

9. Prioritize Quality Sleep and Regular Physical Activity

In addition to nutrition, prioritize quality sleep and regular physical activity to support overall health and well-being. Establish a consistent sleep schedule and create a relaxing bedtime routine to promote restful sleep. Incorporate movement into your daily routine through activities you enjoy, whether it's walking, dancing, yoga, or playing sports. Aim for a balance of cardiovascular exercise, strength training, and flexibility exercises to optimize your physical health.

10. Be Patient and Persistent

Remember that adopting a healthier lifestyle is a journey, not a destination. Be patient with yourself as you navigate challenges and setbacks along the way. Celebrate your successes, no matter how small, and stay committed to your long-term goals. By cultivating resilience and persistence, you'll overcome obstacles and continue moving forward on your path to better health.

There you have it... a whole bunch of simple, fun ways to get back into the swing of it all, but in a fun way-  not a drop it and painfully "diet". We all know that doesn't work. Embrace Open Eating and give yourself grace.

Investing in your health not only enhances your energy levels, mood, and overall vitality but also sets a positive example for those around you. Remember, it's never too late to start again. Each day presents a fresh opportunity to make healthier choices and steer your life in a direction that aligns with your values and aspirations. Take back your life... and help others do the same!
